1970s Vintage Antonio Budji Layug Bamboo and Leather Chairs
In the 1970s, Budji crafted a bamboo chair that caught the attention of Bloomingdale’s in New York—marking one of the first Filipino furniture designs to gain global prominence
His designs blend indigenous materials—bamboo, pandan, Philippine hardwoods—with sleek modernist forms, creating a style he calls “tropical moderne”: warm, minimal, and organically elegant He opened Budji Living showrooms in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Manila, and Bangkok. Later, he partnered with architect Royal Pineda to form Budji+Royal Architecture+Design, a full-service “total design” firm encompassing furniture, interiors, architecture, and landscape.
These chairs are a wonderful large scale but light weight and incredibly comfortable.
The leather is original and distressed.
